Don't give up! You need to test your soil to find out what is going on with it. Ph (acidity or alkaline), mineral content and other indications will tell you exactly what kind of preparation you must do before you set seed or sod. Once you have those results, go to a nursery and ask them for the proper amendments to bring your soil to the proper state. Also, don't overwater. Flooding kills sod. Your lawn grass should 'spring up' after walking on it. If it lays down, then you need to water. Conversely, if you see water pool around your feet, there's too much water.

I highly recommend Scott's lawn products. They WORK. I grew a lawn on TOP of pavement with it, just to see if it could be done. Yes, it can be done. Scott's law products are the way to go.
