Annie anne asked: I live in a ground floor flat (appartment). I have a tiny back garden, with a very small lawn. I moved in about 4 years ago, when the flat was newly built, however there have been various buildings in this area for at least 200 years. When I moved in the lawn looked lovely, but over the first winter most of the grass died off. Since then, I have reseeded the worst patches, reseeded the whole lawn and laid new turf. I’ve also spent lots of time poking holes inthe lawn with a garden fork and filling these with sand to improve drainage, and have dug compost into the soil. Nothing seems to work, each time, all the grass has died. the plants growing in the garden (in the same soil) are doing well. Grass grows between the paving slabs next to the lawn. The neighbor’s lawns look fine. Lots of moss and clover grows on the lawn and there are loads of worms.
Any ideas? or shall I give up and put paving down?
I water it regularly during dry weather. Hosepipes are currently banned in this area but it’s so small it’s easy to do with a watering can.

I need to know how to keep the two seperate(from growing over one another) while still being able to mow without obstruction. What I really want to avoid is his grass from invading my lawn. I think those metal boarders you can hammer into the ground would work, but how high to I need it to be above ground level to effectively keep the lawns seperated?

BS9999 asked: Curious. I have read in some places that mowing a lawn can be good to prevent grassy weeds and in other places that by mowing it weakens the grass and so fertilizing can help keep the lawn well nourished because of injuries such as mowing. I am confused. From my logic, mowing the lawn can only be a bad thing for the lawn since i don’t think in nature it wants to be cut and have to be regrown and by being cut you are more exposed to the air to loose moisture from inside. I can understand that in a controlled way thatching can be a good thing (maintain mosture in the soil because of grass droppings due to mowing) but i dunno.

Can someone explain the benefits of mowing?
